Event Report

We were sponsored this year by a grant from the Emotive program of the Fraser Basin Council, a small fund that helped to buy banners and information boards plus pay for the site rental, insurance, and food for the volunteers. We were also supported again by the Comox Valley Record, our local newspaper which published our press release in an article a few days before the event.

This year we had more dealers than ever collaborate with us to show their EVs and offer test drives, including Honda, VW, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, and Black Cycles.  Volunteers brought their Tesla Ys, 3 and S; Kia Niro; Hyundai Kona; VW ID-4s; Audi e-Tron; GM Equinox, Bolt, and a Spark; Harley Livewire e-motorcycle; and two EV-conversions, a VW microbus and Chevrolet S10 pickup.

We had a list of speakers on all manner of topics around the electrification of transportation and how municipalities are managing the transition to supporting this transition.  Dr. Jonathan Kerr of the Comox Council spoke about the city and public health perspectives.  John Fruhwirth and Karen Weller spoke about long distance trips by EV.  Ted Robb spoke about charging EVs.  Finally Randy Chatterjee spoke about the climate change and public health benefits of the transition to electrified transportation.

Event Description

National Drive Electric Week is around the corner, with hundreds of events across North America to promote electric vehicles. The Comox Valley Electric Vehicle Association will again hold our signature “Move2Electric” Show ‘n Shine on Sunday, September 8th from 10:00 to 4:00.  This year we will be back at the Comox Marina with dozens of new models of electric cars and e-bikes to test-drive.

Come and sign up on site to drive all-electric SUVs, cross-overs, pickup trucks, and sedans from Ford, GM, Hyundai, Nissan, VW, and perhaps new entrants to the electric vehicle (EV) market like VinFast.  Take any of a dozen electric bicycles up the steep hill toward Comox Avenue, and feel the effortless pedalling.  Listen in to speakers explaining how reliable and low maintenance EVs are, how to charge, how EV batteries are made and recycled, how much it costs to “fill up” an EV ($7-$10!), how solar energy can reduce this cost to zero, how easy and comfortable both long-distance rides and transcontinental road trips are, and how electric transportation can help save our planet.

Approximately 30 longtime EV owners and their rides—including GMs, Kias, Audis, Jaguars, Rivians, every model of Tesla, and even a Harley—will be there to provide their experience and answer questions.

Bring your whole family to enjoy Comox Marina’s adjacent water park and its selection of food trucks, for when you are not testing the throttle of the powerful F150 Lightning electric pickup.

The Comox Valley Electric Vehicle Association and Emotive BC are hosting this event, which has in past years attracted as many as 1,400 people.  Across North America, a half million people will attend 300-350 similar car shows to promote a greener future.

The Comox Valley Electric Vehicle Association (CVEVA) has been promoting the economic and ecological benefits of electrified transportation since 2018.  Through monthly member meetings, parades, rallies, and large car and e-bike shows with opportunities to test drive EVs of all kinds, CVEVA members hope to accelerate the adoption of lower-carbon transportation of all kinds.  For more information, go to https://www.facebook.com/CVEVABC/

Emotive is funded by the Province of British Columbia and offers support to communities and local governments in BC to assist with electric vehicle (EV) outreach.  For more information, go to https://www.emotivebc.ca/ .
